The John. A. Dean American Legion Auxiliary Unit 154, hosted by The George P. Siek Jr. V.F.W. Post 8096 of Butler, just wrapped up its 10 for Education backpack campaign and now is collecting items for the troops.
Like many ladies auxiliary organizations in the region, Unit 154 disbanded several years ago due to declining membership.
Tammy DeHaan, the daughter of Army veteran Jerry Waters and president of the auxiliary, helped to resurrect the organization with interest from other women of the local VFW and AL in the Butler, Kinnelon, Bloomingdale and Riverdale area.
“I always wanted to do more to help our veterans and our community,” DeHaan told Daily Voice. “I know I haven't served our country like our veterans did. I wanted to help serve the best way I know how, through help from home.”
It takes 10 members to get an official charter. The multi-generational group now numbers more than 20, including some previous members, and is growing.
Membership is open to any mother, wife, daughter, sister, granddaughter, great-grand-daughter, or grandmother of members of The American Legion, and deceased veterans who served in the United States Armed Forces during wartime.

KARAOKE NIGHT: Second Friday of each month 7 to 11 p.m. at the post at 69 Carey Ave, in Butler. Doors open at 6 p.m
